Remote Courses

October Half Term courses

The 11+ and school entrance exams are looming, so we've created new materials for our half-term courses, with these in mind. Our creative writing for the 11+ exams courses will give your children practice in writing to a time limit; writing in response to a specific prompt or title; planning a story quickly and demonstrating literary techniques such as the use of figurative language, writing coherently, and displaying a rich vocabulary.
Our 11+ Comprehension courses in poetry and non-fiction, will give your children practice in reading and inferring these two genres, which can come up in the exams, and maybe less practiced than fiction extracts. Our tutors will show the groups what the questions are asking for and how to word the answers clearly and earn points by producing evidence from the text to support their answers. In another course, we will use past papers and go through the comprehension tests with the group.
If you have children who are not about to take exams though - we are offering a course in Writing A Ghost Story and What if? Both these courses will take the group through the steps needed to produce believable characters, plot a story, and write it well.

HALF TERM - WEEKLY COURSES

11+ Poetry Comprehension

Date: Monday 19th to Friday 23rd October

Time: 2 pm  to 3 pm

Tymek Woodham, our resident poet, has put together five comprehensions, focussing on poetry. Comprehension tests sometimes include poetry and this club will give your child a head start in how to read poems and recognise poetic forms and ideas.

Comprehension for Exams Non-Fiction

Date: Monday 19th to Friday 23rd October

Time: 11 am  to 12 pm

This course looks at non-fiction extracts of the 19th century, giving background information about the writers, and how they make their writing effective. We also show the group how to respond to questions about non-fiction, make appropriate points, use pertinent evidence, and comment on the evidence effectively.

Write a Ghost Story with Us - Age 7 to 10

Date: Monday 19th to Friday 23rd October

Time: 10 am  to 11 am

Are you sitting in the dark with a candle flickering by your side? Is the wind outside battering your windows? Then we'll begin...

Ghost stories feed the imagination, as at least one of the characters does not have to conform to human restrictions; they can move through objects; terrifying people; and time travel, to name but a few.

On this course, we will show the group how to set up a great ghost story, linking the supernatural to our world, ghost to hero, and provide a satisfying (could it be a twist?) ending. Fun and educational at the same time!

11+ Creative Writing for Exams (new materials)

Date: Monday 19th to Friday 23rd October

Time: 10 am  to 11 am

The group will be given pictures, title and the first line of a story prompts (taken from past papers) and be shown how to quickly plot a story and then write it, using the literary techniques the examiner’s is looking for, within a time limit. This is excellent practice for writing under time pressure but we also aim to make the club fun and inspirational.

What If? - Age 7 to 10

Date: Monday 19th to Friday 23rd October

Time: 10 am  to 11 am

Most stories start with a question: What if the world froze but you were still moving (Hamish and the Worldstoppers); What if our toys come alive (Toy Story); What if our emotions were really little people in our heads? (Inside Out). On this course, we will start with the question and help you on your way to writing a complete story about it - showing you how to add drama, suspense, description, dialogue, and follow the arc of a story.

Comprehension for Exams - Fiction (Using past exam papers)

Date: Monday 26th to Friday 30th October

Time: 10 am  to 11 am

A group will read a comprehension extract together and discuss the text. The materials are a mixture of poetry and prose. They will then be given time to write out their answers and we will show them how to word their answers and read the questions carefully.

11+ Creative Writing for Exams (new materials)

Date: Monday 26th to Friday 30th October

Time: 10 am  to 11 am

The group will be given pictures, title and the first line of a story prompts (taken from past papers) and be shown how to quickly plot a story and then write it, using the literary techniques the examiner’s is looking for, within a time limit.
