Monday 27th to 31st July
11am to 12pm
This course is for those with some experience writing poetry and or has already experimented with short poetic forms like haikus and limericks.
The goal of this course will be to master the mighty sonnet, a fourteen-line essential for any accomplished poet! In preparation, we’ll learn how to write in the most common metrical measure for English poetry, ‘iambic pentameter’; we’ll think about different rhyme schemes, and we’ll do some ‘ekphrastic’ poetry—that is, poetry that describes another work of art or treasured object. The poets John Keats and Percy Shelley used to dual sonnets—with any luck, after this course you’ll be able to wield your own words with like confidence.
