Poetry Comprehension. 12+ Age – June 1st to June 4th: 11:00am to 12:15pm
Reading poetry is an extremely undervalued skill in primary school education. Students frequently complain that they find poetry ‘difficult’, which can lead to a lack of confidence as they begin to handle more complicated materials in secondary school English classes. In this course, we take on one poem per class, unpacking its meaning together and discussing the more technical aspects of poetry such as rhyme schemes, meter and poetic forms. We undertake short, manageable written comprehension tasks that specifically address the kinds of questions likely to come up on 13+ poetry comprehensions and go over our answers together. By the end of the class, our students will be able to tell the difference between an iamb and a trochee, a sonnet from a ballad—and may even be tempted to try their hand at writing a poem themselves!
