PRACTICE COMPREHENSION & CREATIVE WRITING Ages 9 to 11. with Emma.. 4 TO 5PM. 6 weeks.

Many students struggle with, or dislike, comprehension. My aim is to show children that, far from being dull, comprehensions are about the wondrous ways in which a writer brings a story alive for them. I like to break things down when teaching comprehension: to closely discuss any inferences that can be made; to zoom in on the effect of particular words or phrases; and to analyse and decode the questions themselves. As well as answering questions about terrific writing, participants will be encouraged to imitate it themselves by writing a short passage in the style of whichever author – Dickens, T.H.White, Susan Coolidge – we are spotlighting that week.
