Many students struggle with or dislike comprehension. My aim is to show children that, far from being dull, comprehensions are about the many wondrous ways in which a writer brings a story alive for them. I like to break things down when teaching: to closely discuss any inferences that can be made; to zoom in on the effect of particular words or phrases; and to analyse the questions themselves, including the meaning of different terms. As I often tell participants, comprehension is a place to share your opinions. The ‘art’ is in expressing those opinions clearly and succinctly, and this is something we look at closely when sharing and discussing answers.
