11 am to 12 pm
For travel writing to engage the reader, a writer must find the angle into the report, use her own experience and scatter her writing with facts, along with conversations with people she meets on her journey, or snatches of conversation she might overhear. We will look at how Bill Bryson did it by imitating his arriving in England in Notes From A Small Island. We’ll ask the group to write a travel report about their own country, a place they want to go to, and an imaginary land (using Gulliver’s Travels as inspiration).
